What is JPG
JPG is the most common file extension type for files that conform to the JPEG compression standard.
Other file extension types for JPEG compression are JPE, JPEG, JIF and JFIF.
JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
The JPEG compression method is known as a ‘lossy’ type and is best applied to photographic images with smooth transitions between areas of color and tone.
It is not well suited for line drawings, text or solid graphics which have a sharp transition from typically black(ink) to white(paper).
Applying JPEG to these black and white image types will result in greyscale ‘blocky’ artifacts being introduced which will ‘blur’ the distinction between ink and paper.
If we attempt to do a JPG to DXF conversion using a JPEG image we will most certainly not get acceptable results.
Example of JPG
If we were to convert this JPG to DXF without modification then the results would be as follow (vectors displayed in red and magenta, JPG image in black).
Avoiding JPG to DXF problems
1. Do not use JPG.
The simplest way to avoid the above problems is do NOT use JPG file type for line drawings, text or solid graphics. For black and white images use a file type such as TIF set at Group3Fax or preferably Group4Fax. This will not introduce the above problems and beneficially the file size will be relatively small.
However what if you have no control over how the file is given to you and it is a JPG type then we need to modify it.
2. Modify using Thresholding.
Thresholding is a way of setting all gray image parts (pixels) below a certain value to white and all pixels above this value to black.
Scan2CAD contains 2 methods of Thresholding – Simple and Adaptive.
In most cases the Simple method will suffice.
With the JPG image loaded into Scan2CAD, select menu option:-
Raster Effects > Threshold > Simple
You will now be presented with a Scan2CAD Dialog containing a Preview window together with a Threshold slider control.
Setting the slider around the mid point and moving it up and down the scale you will see the resultant effect in the Preview window.
You can zoom in and out of the image in the Preview window to aid clarity.
When you consider that the image is now properly black(ink) for image elements and white(paper) for the background then press the dialog OK button to exit the dialog.
