 What is a JPG file?

JPG is the most common file extension type for files that conform to the JPEG compression standard.

JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group, with other file extension types for JPEG compression including JPE, JPEG, JIF and JFIF.

The JPEG compression method is known as a ‘lossy’ type and is best applied to photographic images with smooth transitions between areas of color and tone. Because of this loss of definition, JPEG compression is not well suited for line drawings, text or solid graphics which have a sharp transition from typically black(ink) to white(paper).

Applying JPEG to these black and white image types will result in greyscale, blocky artefacts being introduced which will blur the definition between the ink and the paper.

If you attempt a JPG to DXF conversion using a JPEG image, you will never end up with a defined and useful product.

How to Avoid JPG to DXF Conversion Problems

1. Do not use JPG.

The simplest way to avoid the above problems is do NOT use the JPG file type for line drawings, text or solid graphics. For black and white images use a file type such as TIF set at Group3Fax, or preferably Group4Fax. This will not introduce the above problems, and beneficially the file size will be relatively small.

However, this advice is not so useful if you have no control over how the file is given to you and it is a JPG type. In this situation we need to modify it.

2. Modify using Thresholding.

Thresholding is a way of setting all gray image parts (pixels) below a certain value to white, while setting all pixels above this value to black.

Scan2CAD contains 2 methods of Thresholding – simple and adaptive. In most cases the simple method will suffice.

Thresholding couldn’t be simpler:

  • With the JPG image loaded into Scan2CAD, select menu option:
Raster Effects > Threshold > Simple
  • You will be presented with a Scan2CAD Dialog containing a preview window together with a Threshold slider control.
  • Setting the slider around the mid point and moving it up and down the scale you will see the resultant effect in the preview window.
  • You can zoom in and out of the image in the preview window to aid clarity.
  • When you consider that the image is now properly black(ink) for image elements and white(paper) for the background then press the dialog OK button to exit the dialog.

Performing a Scan2CAD JPG to DXF Conversion

  • To do a JPG to DXF conversion, select the vectorization type using menu option:
Type > Architectural

(the part drawing we are using is from an Architectural floor plan)

  • Now press the VEC toolbar button

Hey Colin – with Scan2CAD only 2D cDXF files are supported.

Bear in mind that JPEGS and any other image file types are only 2D. So it’s not strictly possible to automatically convert the 2D to 3D. You would probably be best converting the files to DXF with an application like Scan2CAD.

At which point you’d have a clean 2D CAD file with which you’d need to input the ‘z’ axis information. You couldn’t do this step with an application like Scan2CAD.
This probably isn’t the information you were hoping for but I hope it helps somewhat.
