How to install a network license

For instructions on installing different license types, see here.
You will require your license details to install Scan2CAD. See here for instructions on where to find them.
This article relates to Scan2CAD v9.

About a Network License

When you install Scan2CAD for the first time, the application creates a license file and places it in a location of your choice on your LAN (local area network).

All networked PCs will be able to run Scan2CAD as long as they have read and write access to the license file’s location.

Each license allows for a single concurrent user of Scan2CAD. This means your number of licenses is equal to the number of simultaneous users of the software. You can add new licenses whenever you wish.

Installing multiple licenses on the same network?

When you order multiple network licenses from Scan2CAD, by default we provide each as an individual license. This gives you the flexibility to install 1 license per network location if you wish.

However if you wish to install multiple licenses in the same network location we recommend consolidating these licenses into a single license which allows for multiple users. This is much more advantageous from a Network Admin’s point-of-view.

If you wish to exchange multiple network licenses for a single license which allows the same number of users – please contact us letting us know your requirements. We will be happy to help.

Step-by-step installation instructions

You do not necessarily need to read through these instructions. You can simply launch the installer and follow the on-screen prompts to quickly install the application.
  1. As always, it is best practice to install software whilst running as the PC’s Windows Administrator.
  2. Download the install package which was provided with your license.
  3. Launch the install package.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue through the screens. Enter your installation code when prompted. This is the 2 digit code which was provided with your license details.
  5. Scan2CAD will ask you whether you wish to create a new license or point the application to an existing license. Choose to create a new license. Select ‘Next’
  6. Select the location in which you wish to place the Scan2CAD license. Select ‘Next’
  7. You will see an ‘installation successful’ screen. Select ‘Finish’.
  8. Launch the newly created Scan2CAD application. This may be located on your desktop and your Start Menu.
  9. You will see the activation welcome screen. Select ‘Next’
  10. You will be asked which activation method you wish to choose. It is strongly recommended that you choose ‘online activation’ this is instant and easy. ‘Email activation’ should only be chosen if you are activating on a PC which does not have internet access. Select your activation method and click ‘Next’. (The rest of these steps assume that you have chosen ‘Online activation’)
  11. Enter your details as required for registration including your serial number. Only the fields marked in red are required. Click ‘Next’.
  12. Click ‘Next’ again ensuring you are connected to the internet.
  13. You will see a message saying ‘You have successfully activated Scan2CAD’ You do not need to enter an activation key on this screen. Simply click ‘Next’ to finish activation.
  14. The application will launch immediately after activation.

Installing Scan2CAD on subsequent networked PCs

Now that you have installed your Scan2CAD license on your network you can run Scan2CAD on as many networked PC’s as you wish.

The following steps describe how to install Scan2CAD on a ‘secondary’ PC on a networked a license.

Choose to point the application to an existing license. Select ‘Next’
  6. You will then be required to point the application to the location of the license. You defined this location during your first install. After choosing the location, select ‘Next’.
  7. You will see an ‘installation successful’ screen. Select ‘Finish’.
  8. Launch the newly created Scan2CAD application.

This completes your installation on a ‘secondary’ PC. There is no need to enter your serial number.

Moving your license to another PC device

You can of-course move your license to another network or network location if you wish. This can not be done by simply copy and pasting the license file nor by uninstalling the application.

For a step-by-step guide on how to transfer your license to a new lcation please see: → How To Transfer Your License To Another PC

Maintaining multiple licenses on a network

There are two ways in which you can own multiple Scan2CAD network licenses.

Scenario 1: You have a serial number per license and you have therefore generated a license file per user.

Scenario 2: You have consolidated your licenses to a single serial number which allows for multiple users per license file.

As a general rule to keep licensing simple and easy to manage, we recommend that you only have a single license file per network (i.e. scenario 2)

By default, Scan2CAD gives you one serial number per network license (i.e. scenario 1) which is arguably the most flexible of the options but it can be complex to manage multiple licenses in a single network.

Of course, you may have multiple LANs, or subsets on your network, in which case, scenario 1 is perfect for you.

If you have purchased multiple network licenses and wish to consolidate them to a single license, please contact us. We will be happy to help.

Looking after your license

Please take note of the following points to look after your license.

  • Please keep a copy of your license serial number and installation code in a safe place for your records and future reference.
  • You must deactivate your license before wiping your network.
  • Do not delete your license file.
  • You require read and write privileges to run Scan2CAD and access the license file – on some user’s PC this will require running as administrator.
  • If in doubt, please feel free to contact Scan2CAD support we are here to help.

About Subription Licenses

The above information is relevant for your license whether it is a ‘lifetime’ or ‘subscription’ license. Please bear the following additional information in mind:

  • Subscription licenses verify that your license is valid by regularly checking the license server (across the internet.) You should ensure you have internet access when you launch the application.
  • You can upgrade, downgrade, cancel or renew your license at your account
  • A subscription license is not suitable for a PC which does not have regular internet access. In those cases we would recommend a lifetime license.
  • If your recurring payment for a subscription license is declined or canceled, your license will expire and you will not be able to launch the software. You can always update your payment details in your account
